About The Tomb of Itmad -ud Daulah
If one plans tour of Agra he should also visit the Tomb of Itmad -ud Daulah. It is also known as the “Jewel Box” or the “Baby Taj”. The tomb was built between 1622 and 1628 B.C. The mausoleum (tomb) was commissioned by Noor Jahan, wife of Jahangir in memory of her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg, who was also the chief minister of Emperor Jahangir. It is located on the east bank of river Yamuna. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens with crisscross water ways with fountains and walkways. It is built out of red sandstone and marble, with beautiful marble decorations and carvings. It is a wonderful representative of beautiful Islamic style architecture. The tomb is highly appreciated and famous for its stone inlay decorations and intricate fusion of marble decorative carvings. The mausoleum is decorated with precious stones like cornelian, jasper, topaz. It is also famous for its magnificently carved jails or marble lattice screens. It is the first tomb in India to be wholly made of marble and to be built on the bank of river Yamuna.It is easily accessible through public transport, autorickshaw and cycle rickshaws.
